Medical Care

Malta enjoys a high standard of medical care. The general hospital, Mater Dei is in Msida, but there are government health clinics in various towns and other private hospitals. The information given on this portal is not a comprehensive medical guide for travelers to the Maltese Islands.  We advise that persons who are receiving medical treatment and who may need to carry medications into Malta or purchase fresh supplies locally would be well advised to arm themselves with a letter of introduction from their doctor.  Pharmacies generally stock a wide variety of medications and are generally open during shopping hours.  On Sundays chemists open on a roster basis from 09:00 till 12:30 in Malta and from 07:30 till 11:00 in Gozo.

Nightlife

There are a number of lively bars and nightclubs, the main region being in Paceville (St Julians), and others in Bugibba and Sliema. Several open-air discos outside the tourist regions operate only in summer.  Others may enjoy a more relaxing evening dining out in one of the various restaurants all over the Islands or enjoy a night out in one of the many winebars which are increasingly becoming more popular.

Shopping

The most famous areas for shopping are in Valletta, Sliema, St Julians, Mosta and St Paul’s Bay region.  Visitors may also visit the various market stalls, especially the one in Marsaxlokk on Sunday morning.  Another good idea may be the quaint old shops in Valletta’s backstreets which should be perfect for a day out.  Most of the shops are open between 08:00 till 12:00 and from 16:00 till 19:00 Monday till Friday and from 08:00 till 12:00 on Saturdays.  Certain shops, especially in touristic areas, may remain open throughout the whole afternoon.  Shops are normally closed on Sundays and public holidays.
